What will I learn?

The day will start at 10am with a tour of the greenhouses, Walled Garden and perennial beds of Howbury Farm Flowers where the School is located, and an overview of the all important ‘art and science of the cut’. You will be shown how and when to cut, and after cutting a selection of flowers yourself, you will learn how to condition locally grown flowers to ensure maximum vase life.

This will be followed by learning how to grow your own cut flowers. We will spend time in the greenhouses and sow and prick out seedlings and will explore how to decide what and how much to grow, and how to get the most from your cutting garden.

Following a lunch, prepared using seasonal ingredients from the Kitchen Garden, and shared in the grounds of the Estate (weather permitting), the afternoon will be spent in the Flower Barn learning how to arrange artful, asymmetric and naturalistic arrangements, full of vitality and movement, either in bowls or vases for you to take home.

When are the workshops?

We offer our these workshops during Spring and Autumn, when we are busy with sowing seeds, pricking out seedlings and harvesting flowers to arrange with, to allow you to see and learn ‘the full story’ of growing your own cut flowers for arranging.

The Spring workshop will take place on April 22nd and the Autumn workshop will take place on September 16th.

What does it cost?

The full cost of a full day workshop is £250.

What does it include?

The workshop includes all materials, tools and refreshments.

You will also leave with a bucket of fresh, seasonal flowers, selected and cut by yourself from the plots within the Walled Garden, allowing you to continue your arranging at home, as well as the seedlings that you have sown and pricked out during the workshop.

You can either bring a vase or a small bowl (we suggest a rice bowl size for best arranging) or you can add a hand thrown footed bowl or ‘the perfect vase’ made by Foredays which will be provided for you to arrange into.

What about food?

As with all our workshops, we place importance on seasonal meals created with ingredients from the Kitchen Garden enjoyed together, allowing us to build community, foster friendships and share learning experiences.

A delicious seasonal lunch will be enjoyed within the grounds of Howbury Hall (weather permitting) or within the Great Hall at a table dressed by the participants. The day will begin and end with coffee and cake, and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
